A Simple Calendar for When to Buy What
Timing is a discount you don't have to negotiate. A rough month-by-month guide to buying when categories are naturally cheapest.
Some of the best savings don't require a coupon at all — just patience. Most categories have a natural cheap season, usually driven by inventory turnover, new-model releases, or the calendar rolling past a peak. You don't need to be exact. You just need to know roughly when not to pay full price.
Winter: end-of-season and post-holiday January is one of the quietest, most useful months of the year. Retailers are clearing winter apparel, exercise categories run introductory offers, and last year's electronics see meaningful markdowns as new models arrive. February follows a similar pattern for home goods.
Spring: refresh categories March and April tend to reward buyers of last year's outdoor furniture, appliances (especially larger ones near tax season), and travel booked well in advance of summer. Spring is also a good stretch for mattresses and home upgrades.
Summer: mid-season lulls Late June and July have a well-known lull for indoor categories — people are outside, retailers are quieter, and off-season apparel sees the sharpest markdowns. It's a good window for buying next winter's coat.
Fall: the run-up September and October are strong months for grills, patio, and outdoor gear as retailers clear inventory. Early holiday promotions begin in November, but the deepest discounts usually appear at the *end* of the season, not the start.
December: services and gift-adjacent categories Beyond the obvious gift push, December is often when subscriptions, memberships, and services run their most generous introductory offers. If you've been waiting on a paid tool or membership, this is often the month.
How to use this - Keep a short "waiting list" of larger purchases - Note the rough month each one is likely to be cheapest - Check twice — once at the beginning of that window, once near the end
You'll miss the occasional flash deal. You'll also stop overpaying for the ninety percent of purchases where timing quietly does the work for you.
